One of my favorite fantasy short story writers and a frequent commentor on the ditch, Richard Parks, has a first novel, The Long Look, coming out in the Fall.  His two previous books have been collections, The Ogre's Wife (WFA nominee) and Worshipping Small Gods.  His stories have appeared in a wide variety of magazines and antholgies and are often chosen for the Year's Best anthologies. One of the things Parks does well is what I'd call classical fantasy -- wonderful writing, great story telling, humor and a unique take on aspects of the fantastic and the adventure story I sometimes take for granted. Here's the write-up on The Long Look from his publisher. It's due out in September.

Tymon the Black is the latest in a long succession of magicians to suffer under a curse called “The Long Look.” He gets glimpses of future horrors, horrors that will almost certainly come to pass unless he acts. When one such glimpse prods him to arrange for the murder of a would-be hero prince, he sets off a wild chain of events that could lead to a future even more terrible than the one the prince’s death was designed to prevent. Now all Tymon has to do is hang on to a friend, train an apprentice, prevent a prince obsessed with revenge from destroying himself and his entire kingdom, help a princess come to terms with guilt and grief, make sure a wedding happens, make sure a war doesn’t, and send a creature of ultimate darkness back to the void from whence it came.  All in a day's work for the world's most evil wizard? Not quite. There's also a goddess to contend with, and there's nothing like attracting the interest of a goddess to upset the balance of any evil scheme. No matter. No one ever said that the life of a fiend was an easy one.

Yes, I've been looking forward to this one. I enjoyed both collections and his novella from PS last year.

I do wish Five Star was a bit more consumer-friendly. They're geared toward libraries, I think, and their books can be difficult to find in bookstores.

Thanks for the mention, Jeff, and I appreciate the kind words.

I do wish Five Star hadn't cut the last paragraph of the summary, though.

"All in a day's work for the world's most evil wizard? Not quite. There's also a goddess to contend with, and there's nothing like attracting the interest of a goddess to upset the balance of any evil scheme. No matter. No one ever said that the life of a fiend was an easy one."
